ChinaJoy 2007: MMOSite Posts Mythos Roperview

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Gaming news aggregator MMOSite has posted a brief interview that game.tom.com had at ChinaJoy 2007 with Flagship Studios’ CEO Bill Roper about Mythos, Hellgate: London, and the Diablo franchise.

According to Bill Roper, Mythos is a casual style MMORPG, while Hellgate: London is a title oriented toward Diablo fans who are fond of experiencing high technology. Mythos developers are the core members of Diablo series development team. During Mythos development, they drew a lot of experience from Diablo. Bill Roper even claimed that Mythos is the most genuine Diablo sequel.

“We’re very confident that,” said Bill, “Mythos is the most genuine Diablo title. If someday in the future, Blizzard releases Diablo 3, I’ll be all too willing to experience it. But I believe before it comes out, all the Blizzard staff are already loyal supporters of Mythos.”

When being asked, with Hellgate: London and Mythos out on the market, what will Flagship Studios leave to Blizzard if its going to develop Diablo 3, Bill said: “Nothing!”

I’ve cleaned up the grammar in this quote some. Believe the poor grammar found in the link itself is due to a poor translation of the original interview.

New Mythos Build Tonight

Friday, July 13th, 2007

This was posted over at the Mythos website by Max Schaefer

We are putting up the “real” Beta build this evening. All characters will be wiped for this build! We apologize for the inconvenience, but there are enough changes that this is necessary. We think you’ll find many of your issues addressed in this build. We’ve been listening closely to your input and putting it into practice, along with all the things we wanted to change. The servers will be brought down shortly, and when they come back up, it will be with the new build. You will not have to re-install, just log in. Once it’s running and stable, we’ll be expanding the community a bit. Enjoy!!!

Enjoy :)

Games Radar Previews Mythos

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

It’d seem Mythos is starting to get the attention it very much deserves. Games Radar has given the game its second preview this month.

At first glance, the game seems like your run-of-the-mill grinder that tries to hook you in with its free factor before pressuring you to buy stuff. It also looks like Mythos’ world of Uld is filled with all the familiar lazy-bones NPCs who need you to help them get their fix for 20 spider eggs or wolf paws or whatever. So what exactly was so fun about our time with Mythos?

It’s hard to say. But while so many other MMOs let themselves quickly fall into the trap of feeling like just another derivative and boring fantasy-based affair, Mythos somehow manages to steer clear of this common pitfall in several ways.

Although you won’t find anything groundbreaking in terms of Mythos’ ‘click click’ gameplay, part of its charm is owed to how silky smooth the simple Diablo-styled control scheme is implemented. Just directing your character about by holding the left mouse button down with your cursor planted ahead of your avatar has a certain combination of finesse and familiarity that just feels right. It sounds silly to even bother pointing out such a minor detail, but if you take into account that Flagship Studios was started by Diablo creators and former Blizzard bigwigs, it’s not surprising how Mythos ‘ gameplay feels solid from the ground-up.

Schaefer Welcomes Mythos Alphas To Closed Beta

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Just in case folks missed the press release earlier this week, Max Schaefer has posted on Mythos’ official site about the start of the game’s closed beta testing.

As some of you have already noticed, we’ve begun our Mythos Closed Beta test! We’ll be slowly ramping it up again, making new builds, and basically re-entering the public testing phase of Mythos. Log on, make characters, report bugs, and lets get this thing started again! I’d like to extend a welcome back to all our Alpha testers, and also welcome all the new people who will make up the Mythos community. This is going to be a lot of fun!

Alpha players, if you haven’t already, uninstall your current version of Mythos and head on over to Mythos.com to sign in and download the new beta client. Those still waiting to get in, recall that invitations are sent out in first-come-first-serve waves and by the sound of things, there’ll be another wave soon.

Mythos Closed Beta Announced Publically

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

While we were made aware of the start of Mythos’ beta test a few days ago, the press release from Ping0 just went out this morning.

“The opening of the closed beta program is a real milestone in the development of Mythos,” said Phil Shenk, Creative Director of Mythos and founding member of Flagship Studios, “With its simple pick-up-and-play gameplay and an ever-expanding universe, the beta test will offer players their first opportunity to experience the Mythos universe before the commercial release later this year.”

Mythos is an online, action role-playing game that is free to download and free to play. Set in the land of Uld – a fantasy world arising from the ashes of an epoch-long war of darkness – players assume the roles of fantasy heroes as they explore, adventure, and quest through entirely randomized dungeons and environments. With an elegant point-and-click interface and an accessible “isometric” perspective, Mythos is poised to have near-universal appeal. The game allows thousands of players to interact within the same world while using mostly “instanced” dungeons to create unique gaming experiences suited for both solo and group-minded players.
