Hey guys and gals. I am super excited about the Zone 2 beta launch and had a blast last night. I saw a lot of people playing and some pretty sweet items dropped that a few showed off to me. I’ve written a blog about my first day in the Mythos Zone 2 launch. I’ll be updating this hopefully each Tuesday and Thursday! I’ll get screenshots up at some point. See you soon in Mythos!

Patch Notes for New Build

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

The official forums have been updated with patch notes of the new build by Travis Baldree:

The time has come for me to emerge from my cave, squint into the sunlight, and roll out the patch notes for our next big release. An awful lot of work has gone into this, from very small details, to larger, much more far-reaching changes.

The focus for this patch has been three-fold - to address core gameplay issues and problems that get in the way of moment-to-moment ‘fun’, to make advancement in the game more rewarding and interesting, and to expand the world and the sense of place.

We have a lot of stuff planned for the NEXT patch as well, stuff you’re probably all anxious to see ( and so are we ) but we hope that everything that has gone into this one will tide you until it comes along. We think you’ll be pleased with a lot of the changes! The difference in the game is fundamental and widespread enough that we think you’ll have a good time starting over from scratch ( or at least, we like to think that, since we’re making you wipe your hard-earned characters! )

Check our forums for the full patch notes!

Enjoy :)

New Build On It’s Way!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I know this is posted very late, but blame that on time zones and need of sleep!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s finally here! While we put up the new servers, go ahead and start downloading the new Mythos client after you UNINSTALL the old build first! The servers should be up within an hour if everything goes right. As we said before, there was a character wipe, so don’t look for your old characters. We are confident in this build, but this is a massive new update, so expect a glitch or two - we’re crossing our fingers over here. Whatever the case, enjoy, and please post your feedback, good and bad, in the forums. Have fun everyone!!!

Note: By now the servers are already well up and running :D

Note 2: If anyone wants to take screenshots and make a thread about them, that would be very awesome :)

Enjoy :)

GameSpy looks at Mythos

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Gamespy has posted up an article relating to Mythos about a week ago and it concerns how the developers of Mythos are working to get the game out there as well as giving an overview of it.

Mythos was conceived in the mind of its lead engineer, Travis Baldree (creator of the semi-casual dungeon crawl, Fate). The notion of a visually updated, multiplayer dungeon crawl with classic gameplay was appealing to Flagshippers at the corporate headquarters in San Francisco. This isn’t a particularly surprising fact given that the Flagship company roster and the credits from Diablo and Diablo II are nearly indistinguishable.

Versatile people represent the key to making a small team work. Without people that can perform multiple roles, it becomes difficult to realize the “low overhead” benefits of having a small team. We’ve got a great team of people and when they see that something needs to get done, they’re willing to jump in and help out regardless of what’s in their job description.

While this kind of flexibility really helps us get the job done, it also requires a certain type of personality to make it work. We all want to make the best game possible, and we all voice our opinions pretty freely to our coworkers. Our engineers frequently have input on the art that goes into our game. On the flip side, our artists often voice strong feelings about specific game features as they are implemented. We all tend to be bluntly honest with our assessments, whether positive or negative.

Enjoy :)

Mythos Zone 2 - October 15th

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

This is copied from my post from Hellgate Guru, so mite sound weird at the start but yeah… go with it… :)

—-

While we don’t usually news a lot of Mythos stuff on Hellgate Guru, this news item is of great importance to many people behind Mythos. Most of us regulars here at Hellgate Guru were in Alpha of Mythos and it was the first taste of FSS games we got. Many of us also stopped playing after a while.

Well here is a great chance for those of us who stopped to come back. The official Mythos website has posted up a news item on zone 2 which follows:

Greetings Mythos Testers! We are pleased to announce that a huge new update is scheduled to go live this Monday. This “Zone 2″ update will nearly double the available content, adding a new city, new levels, new monsters, new quests, new items, new skills, and lots of polish and tweaks throughout the game. The new zone is dubbed Bloodbristle Heath, and the new city, Tulin’s Hope. Many more details are forthcoming!

A couple notes: There will be a character wipe prior to the update. Additionally, due to changes in the patching system, you will be required to uninstall Mythos and download it again after we publish the update. Woohoo! It’s great to be back in action!

Enjoy :)

Hellgate Guru FR Interviews Taylor Balbi, Mythos CM

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Some of our old-timers know him as Krazy Kaution, inruin, or “that smarmy guy on IRC”. Newer folks will know him as Candlejack. However you refer to him, Taylor Balbi, once a member of Hellgate Guru’s technical crew, has served as Community Manager of Mythos in Flagship Studios’ downtown San Francisco offices for a little over a month now. G-15, administrator of Hellgate Guru’s foreign outreach program (and Hellgate Guru FR), conducted a eight-question Balbiview which Taylor answered via email.

1) First of all, introduce yourself to our readers!

Hey guys, my name is Taylor and I’m an… oh wrong group. Let me start over. Hey guys, my name is Taylor Balbi aka Candlejack on the forums.

2) How did you discover Hellgate: London, and what was your role in Hellgate Guru?

Well, I discovered Hellgate: London a bit before E3 2005 while talking to a friend about the devs of the Diablo series. We were wondering what they were doing so I looked it up and found out about Flagship. Then sort of stuck to their name for a while until at E3 they did this big thing on Hellgate, showing that amazing trailer. Ever since then, I was hooked! May 15, 2005 is I believe the date I joined up with HellgateGuru.com, but not as staff. I was more of a fan of the game and just happy to be in the community so early. I had no idea that I would eventually work for HellgateGuru.com and in result land a job at Flagship Studios of all places.

3) How did you get into contact with Flagship Studios, and how were you hired?

It’s a funny story. While I was in contact with Flagship due to my position at HellgateGuru.com, there was never any real thought about them being a potential employer, ever. Then, May 15, 2007 (2 years later, kind of weird) we were at Community Day and I was approached and was told that I should put my resume into Flagship Studios. I didn’t think it was anything that would stick, but what do I have to lose? I went home, typed up my resume and sent it in. Waited a while, stuck in contact with them with nothing prevailing.

Eventually I had figured I just wasn’t up to par to work for someone of such a high reputation; until I moved in with Pyke. I know it sounds like a really weird story, Pyke the former Technical Director of HellgateGuru.com, and Krazy Kaution moving in together. It sounds like a train wreck that spawns an earthquake lol. So Pyke and I moved in together in San Francisco since he got a job at Ping0. I was looking for work and thought, what the heck I’ll drop Flagship a line. I sent out the e-mail about how I was living in the city and got a response the next day. Had lunch with them the day after that, and POOF! Landed the perfect job!

4) They already met and knew you, did that influence their choice?

I think it did because of how they knew me. I was already a member in both Hellgate and Mythos communities. I played mythos way more than I should have (when I should have been looking for a job), and basically loved the game so why not hire someone who is obsessed with the game and already a semi-familiar face! I definitely think that had a part in me landing this position, but I don’t know for sure what the real deciding factors are.

5) What is your job at Flagship Studios?

I am currently the Community Manager for Mythos. I think it’s the best job I have ever had, and some of my jobs have been pretty damn good! ;)

6) What do you enjoy the most about working there?

You know, it sounds a bit cliché for me to say it, but it’s the people. Everyone here is awesome at what they do and all have great attitudes. Even when some people are under a lot of pressure to get things done, the smiles never end. It’s probably the first place that I have worked where I didn’t hear people bitching about going to work. I think it’s safe to say this is the happiest place in San Francisco hahaha.

7) What can you tell us about Mythos, and about its future?

Well, for those not familiar with Mythos, it is… how did Brock put it? It is an “Online Multiplayer Action Role Playing Game Dungeon Crawl (OMARPGDC for short).” To be honest, I’m not entirely sure most people even understand that… I’m not entirely sure I understand what that is haha. So I’ll explain in the best way I can. Currently the game puts you into the world of Uld surrounded by confusion and forgotten histories. You are viewing everything from an Isometric view and you go from dungeon to dungeon eradicating terrors and bad guys from the lands. The worlds are completely random. There will be major cities that you can fly to and from using the Sky Ships and lots of skills for you to invest your hearty level ups into. It is your Action RPG game with lots of added flare and fun that will keep you playing for a long time. So long as you guys are there, we’ll be here making it a great experience for you!

8) Here is your opportunity to speak directly to the French-speaking communities of Mythos and Hellgate: London. What do you want to say to them?

Bonjour, we are definitely happy that we have such a worldly following. A lot of the time when games are in development, it’s only their native country that gets involved, but you guys are different. It gives me a big grin when I think about how many diverse cultures are enjoying Mythos as much as we are. We love seeing people from all lengths of the world come together to enjoy something that we have made. Stay tuned because we have a lot planned and are very excited to hear your feedback when Zone 2 releases!

Enjoy :)

Double Header Thursday #2

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Taylor has updated the last news post with new information on the skills:

Well, I think it’s time for the bean spillage! Last week I gave two screenshots showing some new stuff and some familiar stuff. A few people had some interesting ideas of what they were; even though they weren’t correct. So, how about we kick this off!
The first screenshot you saw was of a new Bloodletter skill. While, a lot of people loved the bloodlings, the way they are summoned has changed. Now it requires a corpse to summon, much like our new little friends I conjured with Summon Blood Imp. They are a ranged specialized minion that really lay down some fire! Now, of course they have their beefing skills, Improved Blood Imp which increases their speed and health; also there’s Blood Imp Mastery which allows the Imps to shoot farther as well as increases their damage and attack rating.

The second screenshot was one of my more favorite Flamecaster skills Flame Serpents. This skill summons a cone of flaming serpents that move side to side giving you a greater chance of hitting a bad guy compared to other AOE skills similar to it. The second tier of this skill is called Serpent Volley which is a must have if you want to take full advantage of the skill. This increases the number of serpents and also gives them a chance to ignite foes (set them on fire). Then of course, there’s Blinding Adders, which improves the speed and range of Flame Serpents.
