Mythos Interview with Max Schaefer

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Stropp’s World, a gaming blog, has published up an interview that they took with Max Schaeffer, who is the executive producer of Mythos.

The interview is full of information on what is to come as well as information on what the pricing system will be like. A snippet is provided below, but I suggest heading over to Stropp’s site to check out the full interview as it’s full of interesting information.

Stropp: It’s been previously announced that Mythos will be free to play. Can you tell us what revenue model you will be using? What incentives will there be for players to pay extra?

Max: We will be using an RMT model. Our goal is to provide a wonderful, robust free experience, but offer attractive options for people who are willing to pay to get extra luxuries, or enhance their adventuring. We don’t want to simply sell the best items - even paying players will have to go kill monsters to find the best loot. Also, we plan to let players trade the in-game cash currency for items with non-paying players. This way, even the cash items will be available to free players, and we’ll avoid splitting the community into the haves and have-nots.

Stropp: There’s been quite a lot of discussion around the MMO blogging community recently about RMT. How do you intend to deal with third party gold and item sellers?

Max: It’s very difficult to stop item selling. Instead, we are investigating actually allowing players to sell items though a secure in-game marketplace rather than resorting to Ebay. We don’t think gold farming will be a huge issue in Mythos, however, since the RMT currency cannot be farmed, and the in-game gold doesn’t buy you everything you need. Nevertheless, we stop gold farming whenever we can.

Enjoy :)

MythosGuru Interviews Marsh Lefler

Monday, January 28th, 2008

It’s Week 2 of MythosGuru’s Dev-A-Week Quasi-Weekly feature. (By Quasi-Weekly, I mean it’s a weekly feature, but the weeks may or may not be consecutive.)

This week, MythosGuru has interviewed Programmer/Quest Designer/Etc., Marsh Lefler, much like the previous interview with Jason Beck.

Next week — whenever next week occurs (could be three weeks from now!) — either Particle Programmer, etc. John Dunbar or Environment Artist Kevin Green is on the bubble.

Be sure you check it out, the Devs are somewhat interesting people. ;-)

If you missed the interview with Grimby from a few weeks ago, you can find it here.

Enjoy,

Big Weekend Ahead

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Straight of the Mythos Website:

As some of you may have noticed, we have a fresh new batch of Mythos Beta testers joining us. Welcome to all of you! So far we’ve hit a CCU record of 975, and should break 1000 this weekend! We’re not 100% sure what is going to happen once everyone is on, but it should be fun to watch! Please help make everyone feel welcome, and remember, the Mythos Beta is an international test, and all languages may be spoken in chat. We ask that everyone is respectful and understanding of our growing community and diverse demographics.

Good to see Mythos doing so well even in Beta!

Enjoy :D

Mythos Trailer #2

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Flagship Studios have published their second trailer for Mythos today, and while many sites have reported on it, here is a link from GamersHell. You can download the HD version of it here.

Flagship Studios today released a new trailer in HD format from Mythos, showcasing this online role-playing game set in the land of Uld - a fantasy world arising from the ashes of an epoch-long war of darkness. Players assume the roles of fantasy heroes as they explore, adventure, and quest through entirely randomized dungeons and environments. The game allows thousands of players to interact within the same world while using mostly “Instanced” dungeons to create unique gaming experiences suited for both solo and group-minded players.

EDIT: Here is a link to Kotaku as well, which has the video linked on youtube.

Mythos Review

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

A new review has popped up of Mythos by “Stropp’s World” which is a gaming blog site, whose owner reviewed his Mythos play session, from level 1 through to 5.

The gameplay is pure Diablo 2. If you’ve played Diablo 2 you’ll know what I mean. You move around by pointing and clicking the mouse, and when you come across a monster clicking on it attacks it. It’s a very simple mechanic, and it works.

Enjoy :)

Chris Taylor Recommends Mythos in IGN Interview

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

In a recent interview, regarding CES2008, Chris Taylor (designer of Dungeon Siege, Total Annihilation, and the upcoming game, Space Siege among others), added a little plug for Flagship Seattle’s little tugboat title, Mythos.  It’s a short plug, but if a tiny, still-in-Beta game like this can catch the eye of a rival developer so well, it’s definitely worth noting.

The context, and the plug:

IGN: The PC gaming landscape is obviously changing right now. What are your thoughts on that, where do you think it’s headed?

Chris Taylor:: It’s going online in a lot of way, but it’s absolutely going into an online authentication. It’s kind of going into an online transaction-y kind of a way because we need new ways to monetize it, but that’s not what it really means across the board. What it really means to me is that PC gaming wants to reach more people, not just the hardcore guys, it wants to reach people who have three year old systems. I’d say four but I think three is enough. I personally would like to see gaming reach anybody who would have walked past a Pac-Man game 25 – 30 years ago and said “hey that looks cool.” I think we’ve lost those people. In fact, I’ve been saying that the last couple of years. I read a question from an interview and Nolan Bushnell said something like that, and I went “he’s got it right, that’s exactly right.” We screwed up, because…well in a way we’ve corrected it over the last five or six years with casual gaming, but casual gaming right now is arguably too casual and we need to thicken it up a little bit, we need to hardcore it up a little bit but not too much. But we’re at two extremes. We’re at casual on one end, and hardcore [on the other end].

A game called Mythos from Flagship [developer of Hellgate: London] that’s in beta is an absolutely fantastic game and I would point people towards it. It’s a ton of fun, that feels to me that it’s just right on the money. My wife and I, we can play it together, and we can play it with the kids, it’s great.

Whoo!  Mythos is garnering professional attention.  Good news!
